Victoria University academics Paul Hamer and Susy Frankel have been appointed to the Waitangi Tribunal.

As a historian, Dr Hamer has mainly worked for the Waitangi Tribunal and Te Puni Kōkiri.

His own research has concentrated on the migration of Māori to Australia, with his PhD thesis for Monash University in Melbourne being entitled 'From Federation to the "501s": Māori Inclusion and Exclusion in Australia Since 1901'.

As well as being a research fellow at Victoria University, he is currently employed as a principal advisor in Māori strategy and partnerships at the Department of Corrections.

Professor Frankel holds the chair of Intellectual Property and International Trade Law at Victoria University and has worked for many years in the realm of intellectual property, including the protection of mātauranga Māori.

Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta says they bring a wealth of expertise to the Tribunal.

Former Hauraki mayor and Local Government New Zealand president Basil Morrison was reappointed to the tribunal for a further three-year term.
