Shea steps up at Bay DHB


Māori health expert Sharon Shea has been appointed interim chair of the Bay of Plenty District Health Board after the sudden resignation of Sir Michael Cullen, who is being treated for lung cancer.
Ms Shea was the board’s deputy chair.
From Ngāti Hauā, Ngāti Ranginui and Ngāti Hako, she started her career as a lawyer before switching to the health sector, including a spell at the National Health Service in the UK where she also studied at Oxford University, gaining a Master of Science in comparative social policy.
Since returning to New Zealand in 2002 she has run a successful consulting business and is recognised as a leader in health and disability sector strategy, equity strategy and practice, change management and service design.
In 2019 she was awarded a New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Māori health and development.
