National’s Mana candidate hopes her Nāti relatives will get her over the line in the September 19 election.
List MP Jo Hayes has previously stood in South Island seats, but put her hand up for the Porirua-based seat after the party hierarchy rejected a policy shift that would have allowed her to stand in Te Tai Hauāuru, where she has whakapapa connections.
She also has connections to Ngāti Porou.
"The majority of Māori that live in the Mana electorate are actually from Ngāti Porou. I've done my studies and think we can really give it a really good go, and because Kris Faafoi has stood aside, has gone on the list, I think we can really start to shine in that electorate," Ms Hayes says.
She says National’s 2017 candidate, Euon Murrell, was unwell for much of the campaign so the party's result was down, but in earlier elections, Hekia Parata got relatively close to Kris Faafoi.
