Whānau Ora Minister Peeni Henare is in Te Kuiti today celebrating the first birthday of the Maniapoto Whānau Ora Centre.
He says the community-driven initiative is a great example of the whānau ora kaupapa, using health services as a basis for the delivery of a wider range of services.
Under Christine Brears from the Taumarunui Community Kokiri Trust, it is already considering expansion.
"They're talking about different outreach models into rural communities where is it's often harder for whānau to come into the centre, and they go that extra mile in a very Māori way. When kuia and kaumatua come in, they don't just come in for (health) services. They offer so many other things that just make them feel a little bit more welcome and building that trust with our community," Mr Henare says.
