Kaupapa Maori focus in Otangarei transitional whare

Māori Development Minister Hon Nanaia Mahuta has opened what's being described as the first kaupapa Māori transitional homes.
The six units in the Whangarei suburb of Ōtangarei Papakāinga were built by Ōtangarei Papakāinga Limited and Te Hau Āwhiowhio ō Ōtangarei Trust with help from a $450,000 investment from Te Puni Kokiri and a similar amount from the Ministry for Housing and Urban Development.
Ms Mahuta says papakāinga reflects a whānau support system which means the kāinga are more than physical structures.
The papakāinga will provide whānau Māori who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, with a setting where kaupapa Māori wrap-around-services will help them get back on their feet faster.
One of the six units is for an on-site manager.
