Awanuiarangi stung by kickback scheme

A former employee of the tertiary education provider Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi has admitted receiving kickbacks.
Midway through her trial in Tauranga District Court yesterday, 60-year-old Katherine Tuhakaraina pleaded guilty to one representative charge of ‘receiving a secret reward for procuring contracts’.
The Serious Fraud Office says Tuhakaraina recommended the wānanga contract with Koa Consultants to deliver an education course, for which she received about $150,000 in secret commissions.
Her employer was unaware the defendant had any personal interest in the awarding of work to the Rotorua-based firm.
Tuhakaraina will be sentenced on May 5.
