The National Party's attempt to greenwash its brand was met with howls of protest at the weekend.
Protesters gathered outside a so-called blue-green conference in Nelson on Saturday to highlight National's environmental record in Government.
Spokesperson Jen Branje says National's refusal to put any checks on the agriculture industry led to increasing pollution of waterways and aquifers – which is having real consequences now.
"Especially in Canterbury, the nitrate leaching into the groundwater has instigated a warning from the chief medical officer for mothers not to mix their baby formula with bore water because it could cause the blue baby syndrome, which results in death quite often, and we are really worried about that," she says.
Jen Branje says all New Zealanders need to take on the role of kaitiaki to protect water.
