The head of Labour’s Māori seat campaign says he’s looking forward to going to the hustings on how much more Labour has done for Māori than the Māori Party.
Māori Party co-founder Dame Tariana Turia says the Government does nothing to help Māori and continues to harm them with its response to Oranga Tamariki uplifts and whānau ora funding.
Labour has also come under fire for preferring universal policies that treat all people the same rather then backing solutions aimed just at Māori.
Willie Jackson says that’s not what the record will show.
"We’ve opened up the 5 gigahertz spectrum in terms of special Māori access. It never would have happened under National and the Māori Party. Māori unemployment has come down big time. We've got more Māori in employment than ever before. Once we get into campaign mode, I am going to get great joy showing our people how much more we did than the Māori Party," he says.
He can also point to the Ihumātao occupation, which happened because the Māori Party and National created a special housing area on the land.
