The United Māori Mission is looking for three Maori women students to fill up its new Tiroroa Residence on Auckland’s Khyber Pass.
The hostel is for wahine studying at either tertiary or trade training level, and current residents include students in performing arts, makeup, waka, teaching, acupuncture and medicine.
Mission spokesperson Hilda Hemopo says secure accommodation can help Māori wahine through their studies.
"I know from my experience that it's very difficult, especially if you're starting at university, there's a huge jump from stage 1 to stage 2. So you lose a lot of Māori very early along the educational pipeline. Our desire is to be there to whakawhanaungatanga and support in any way we can," Dr Hemopo says.
The United Māori Mission has run hostels for decades in Owens Road in Mt Eden and Lovelock Rd in Epsom, and it bought the building next to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre Tātai Hono in December.
