$300m package turning point in homelessness response

Community housing providers says the Government’s $300 million homelessness action plan could be a turning point in bringing the housing crisis to an end.
The package was announced yesterday by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern at the opening of Te Whare Hinātore, Auckland City Mission’s new facility for homeless women.
It includes $175 million to add 1000 additional transitional housing places this year and $20 million to work with Māori providers to prevent homelessness and expand housing supply.
Scott Figenshow from sector body Community Housing Aotearoa says a good home is a fundamental human right and an essential foundation for having a good life.
He says it’s good the Government has acknowledged the direct link between experiences of homelessness and having an adequate supply of affordable homes for people to live in.
