GI rebuild on right track – Goff

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff believes the urban regeneration initiatives in Glen Innes-Point England and Mount Roskill are now on the right track in terms of ensuring existing residents get a fair shake.
The Glen Innes development sparked protests under the previous Government from people who said established communities were being destroyed to open up land for high priced developments.
Mr Goff says disruption is inevitable when communities are rebuilt, but he has a clear commitment from Government that existing residents aren’t permanently displaced.
"Probably with GI, it started off without that clear assurance but it has moved to the point now where I am assured that everybody who leaves a home because it is going to be demolished gets the opportunity to come back to a home in that area if that is their choice," he says.
Mr Goff says the regeneration means there will be more social housing in those areas than before, as well as a range of other homes.
