Fulbright scholar reaches for the stars
Dr Haki Tuaupiki from the University of Waikato has been named this year’s Fulbright-Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Scholar.
Dr Tuaupiki, who has Waikato and Tūwharetoa whakapapa, will conduct research at the University of Hawai‘i Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo about the record of traditional Māori and Hawai’ian navigation and voyaging embedded in oral arts and literature.
Ngā Pae senior researcher Huia Jahnke from Massey University has a Fulbright Scholarship to research partnerships between indigenous communities and higher education providers at University of California, Los Angeles and the Salish-Kootenai Tribal College, Montana.
Professor Jahnke, who hails from Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ngāi Tahu, and Ngāti Hine, says she was inspired to apply for the award because the philosophy of Fulbright focuses on fostering intercultural relationships and provides an opportunity for academic exchange.
University policy and practice is also on the mind of Dr Tyron Love from the University of Canterbury.
The Te Ātiawa scholar will use his Fulbright at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Arizona to examine the exclusion and exploitation of indigenous academics.
