Russell Forest kaitiaki get post-1080 boost


Te Rūnanga o Taumarere ki Rakaumangamanga has been given $114,000 from the Department of Conservation community conservation fund to maintain and extend trapping networks in the Russell Forest established after the successful aerial 1080 operation in 2018.
Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage says Russell Forest roopu have a long term goal of returning what was lost, which fits with the fund’s purposes.
Other grants in Te Taitokerau announced yesterday include $144,000 to help Puketi Forest Trust expand its work on existing and new trap and bait station lines, replace infrastructure and expand monitoring of the kōkako population before the next breeding season.
Kaitiaki Kiwi, which works to cut downtime number of mustelids and feral cats in an around Waipoua Forest, is to get $174,411 to expand its trapping network.
