Poi business shows whanau ora spirit
South Island whānau ora commissioning agency Te Pūtahitanga opens the 11th round of its wave funding today, and chief executive Helen Leahy says it’s proving an effective way to help whanau stand on their own feet.
An example from the last round is Potiki Poi E Tū, set up by Dunedin 13-year-old Georgia Tiatia Fa'atoese Latu and her mother Anna to create eco-friendly poi.
She says there is a huge potential demand for their product from kapa haka and schools, and the business is also a way to pass on Māori knowledge and traditions.
"We have funded their initiative and provided them with a coach who can help navigate them around the legal issues or looking at marketing plans, looking at better communications," she says.
