New Zealand Māori Council executive director Matthew Tukaki has ruled out standing for the Māori Party in this year’s election.
The former recruitment industry executive has taken a major role in revitalising the council’s profile after returning from Australia.
He has been tagged in media reports as a member of a potential dream team that could win back some of the Māori seats for the party.
While he does not rule out a political career, he says for now his commitment is to the council and the National Māori Authority.
Mr Tukaki says the New Zealand Māori Council and other Māori organisations outside of politics are pivotal to instilling hope, aspiration and opportunity for Māori.
