King’s flag lowered at Ihumatao

The flag of the Māori King was lowered at Ihumātao this morning in the expectation of a resolution to the dispute over the whenua.
The manawa was raised in August when Kiingi Tūheitia visited the occupation site and offered to facilitate discussions between mana whenua.
Spokesperson Rahui Papa says Kiingitanga has spent six months in intense negotiations to find a creative solution outside of the Treaty of Waitangi settlement process for the return of Ihumātao to its rightful owners.
He says a positive resolution is expected ahead of Waitangi Day.
Kiingitanga acknowledged the patience and hard work of others, particularly Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
