Ihumatao end draws near
South Auckland-based list MP Willie Jackson says a settlement to the Ihumātao occupation is not far off.
Fletcher Building yesterday started pulling the temporary fences it erected on the site in July, when its attempt to start a 480-home development sparked occupation of part of the land by the SOUL group.
Mr Jackson says in recent weeks Finance Minister Grant Robertson has stepped up as lead negotiator, and good progress is being made.
"There’s a lot here. We're talking mana whenua. We're talking the king and Tainui. We're talking Fletchers. We're talking
Government. We're talking precedent. We're talking our mates in New Zealand First and we certainly pay them respect too in terms of how they view things. Things have gone well and we're not far off but the news media thought it was all going to happen this morning. There's a little way to go yet," he says.
