Clear language spells out smoking strategy


A paper titled The Role of Identity in Resisting TobaccoSmoking has won the Māori and Pacific category in a competition run by the
University of Auckland Business School to encourage effective communication of quality research.
Dr ‘Ilaisaane Fifita from the University of Auckland looked at the high rate of smoking amongst Māori and Pacificcommunities and ways to increase peoples’ resistance totaking up smoking.
She identified how messages to Māori and Pacific communities should be framed around specific themessuch as family, empowerment, and independence.
An unexpectedfinding from her research showed there were implications forpreventing risky behaviours in other areas such as drug useand binge drinking.
