The head of whānau ora at Manukau Urban Māori Authority says the queues for this year’s Christmas food parcels shows many whānau still haven’t seen anything of this year’s the Wellbeing Budget.
It’s the last day of the distribution organised by Auckland City Mission in partnership with MUMA and other agencies.
Veronica Henare says more than 1500 parcels of food and presents have been handed out to the people who have gathered at Ngāa Whare Waatea Marae each day, many of them camping overnight to get a place.
Their stories are something the politicians should heed.
"I would say to the Prime Minister come down here to Waatea, go to Papakura, go to Eden Park, go to Vision West, and see well being, well it's not there. Our people are absolutely suffering in Tāmaki Makaurau," she says.
