Minute’s silence as Whakaari search continues

A further search of Whakaari White Island has failed to find the bodies of two people still unaccounted for after last Monday’s eruption.
Police Deputy Commissioner Mike Clement says yesterday’s search means they can now rule out any bodies being near the jetty area.
The bodies are probably in the water, and weather dependant the Police National Dive Squad will be out again today.
Police have confirmed that among the bodies recovered from the island on Friday was 24-year-old tour guide Tipene James Te Rangi Ataahua Maangi.
A further victim of the eruption died on Saturday in hospital in Australia, bringing the official death toll to 16.
A minute’s silence will be observed at 2.11pm today in honour of the victims of the Whakaari White Island eruption.
