Joe Te Rito is on the hunt for stories, sayings and words hidden in the archives of Radio Kahungunu.
He's been appointed an adjunct associate professor at Hastings' Eastern Institute of Technology for a three-year research project studying recordings of Kahungunu elders.
Dr Te Rito is the station's founding chair, as well as heading EIT's faculty of Māori studies for 17 years before taking up roles at Māori TV, Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga and tertiary sector workforce development organisation Ako Aotearoa.
He says the kōrero from the past can help stabilise the reo today as well as highlight sayings that could have been lost.
"The research is looking at the mātauranga Māori contained in all those recordings of kaumātua because we've got lots and lots of them, we've got hundreds of them," Dr Te Rito says.
