Manukau Institute of Technology’s new head of nursing says having a workforce that reflects the population is key to addressing Māori inequity in health and education.
Dr Deborah Rowe will oversee a new programme to get more Māori and Pasifika into the health sector.
Te Ara Oranga: Pathways to Wellbeing aims to get 500 school leavers into health careers by 2025, as well as recruiting a further 600 Māori and 1200 Pacific health workers.
She says a good start is finding the right people to recruit and mentor students and keep them engaged.
"We need to be engaged and we need to know what the community needs. It's not just about putting a programme out there. It's about meeting the needs of the community, whānau, hapū and iwi and fono. So we really need to get the right people in those places to respond to that cultural responsiveness." she says.
