Cash and cans on city missioner’s Christmas list

Auckland City Missioner Chris Farrelly is rattling the tin for donations as the festive season takes hold.

The mission expects to distribute over 8,000 Christmas food parcels and 40,000 children’s gifts at its four distribution sites over the next two weeks.

Donations can be dropped off to Nga Whare Waatea Marae, Papakura Marae, Eden Park or the mission headquarters in Union St.

He says cash and canned goods are needed the most.

"We're looking always for cash at this time because if you go on the Auckland City Mission website you can donate cash because that means tomorrow we can go down and get what we need to supplement on a day to day basis. Secondly, what we want are no-perishable foods, so those canned foods with protein and stuff in," he says.

Chris Farrelly says there has been a 40 percent increase in demand for food parcels over the past year.
