Runanga gets say in water consent challenge

The High Court has allowed Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga to make a late submission as an interested party to a judicial hearing challenging Environment Canterbury’s approval of a water bottling business.
The rūnanga asked to provide a Ngāi Tūāhuriri perspective that the regional council failed to consider the cultural effects of its decision.
Campaign group Aotearoa Water Action claims in giving Cloud Ocean Water and Rapaki Natural Resources permission to take water from neighbouring bottling plants in Belfast, ECan relied on decades-old consents for industrial uses rather than treating the application as a new consent.
The hearing is due to end today.
