First homes ready at Ngati Whatua’s Shore development
Ngāti Whātūa Ōrakei testing the price it can get for the first finished homes in its development overlooking Shoal Bay on Auckland’s North Shore.
Oneoneroa, restoring the area’s original name, was developed on the former navy land bought as part of the commercial redress for the iwi.
Project team member Anahera Rawiri says while the average price in the Belmont area last month was $1.1 million, there is nothing similar to the 13 terrace units, so they’re keen to see what they fetch.
"This is a commercial development. All the income we get from these developments are invested straight back into Ngāti Whātūa Ōrakei mō te uri Tūpiri so we are trying to get the best price we can for the product so we can do more in our papakainga in Ōrakei and for our uri," she says.
Ngati Whatua members have first option on the units, the trust board’s vision is to encourage tribe members to buy in to the papakainga it is building around Orakei Marae.
