Maori sports champions great role models
The organiser of the Māori Sports Awards would like to see more mainstream acknowledgement of Māori sporting champions as Māori.
Dick Garrett says he’s frustrated the awards get little coverage outside the Māori media, given the potential of sport to inspire and change behaviour.
"This is one angle I believe that we should if we can to get mainstream media to support and showcase what we are doing because we need to showcase those role models, Lisa Carrington and so on, Noeline Taurua, all of our greats, back into our Māori youth," he says.
Olympic gold medalist and world champion canoe racing winner Lisa Carrington was again judged Māori sportswoman or the year and Silver Ferns coach Noeline Taurua won the coaching tohu, with the pair sharing the supreme Albie Pryor Memorial Rongomaraeroa award.
All Black scrum half Aaron Smith was sportsman of the year, and league player Ruben Wiki was this year's inductee into the Māori Sports Hall of Fame.
