Davis wants Maori Council focus on big issues
Māori Crown Relations Minister Kelvin Davis says the New Zealand Māori Council needs to avoid barking at every passing car.
He has congratulated the council's new chair, Henare Mason, who replaced Sir Taihākurei Durie at the council's annual meeting in Rotorua on the weekend.
The change, with Sir Taihākurei becoming the pou or president, comes as part of a process of reorganisation aimed at giving the organisation relevance in a post-settlement environment.
Mr Davis says focus is critical at this time.
"What they have to be careful of is not just barking at every passing car. I think they need to be a lot more focused on the big issues and make a difference in them, don't just go shouting at every issue because in the end it just becomes background noise," he says.
