Do-up needed for Taitokerau housing

Māori and community housing advocates in Northland met with Government ministers and MPs in Whangarei to look at what could be done to tackle the region’s housing crisis.
Northland Housing Forum member Tim Howard says much of the focus of Kiwibuild has been on tackling problems in the major cities, but the regions also struggle with a lack of affordable housing, whether to rent or buy.
He says the hui also highlights some positive initiatives.
“Tū Te Aroha is a small project out of He Iwi Kotahi Tātou Trust in Moerewa. There are solid houses there, some of them of kauri or other background. They just need to be upgraded in order to be good living places and so let’s not focus entirely on new house builds, let’s also look at upgrading those ones that can be upgraded,” Mr Howard says.
He says the forum hopes Associate Housing Minister Mahuta Mahuta and Northland-based list MP Willow-Jean Mahuta will pass key issues form the hui to Housing Minister Megan Woods.
