West and East combine to develop new service programme for Tāmaki whānau
Three major organisations are joining forces to help support whānau from Tāmaki in East Auckland move from crisis to flourishing.
Tāmaki Regeneration Company (TRC) has chosen West Auckland’s Te Whānau o Waipareira
and East Auckland’s Te Hoe oo Taamaki – a collective of Tāmaki based social service providers – Ruapotaka Marae, Glen Innes Family Centre and Tāmaki Community Development Trust, to design and deliver a new service, called Whānau by Whānau.
The service will awhi and manaaki whānau facing multiple and complex challenges, such as homelessness, high levels of debt and food insecurity, to move to a space where they are thriving.
Working together to develop the Whānau by Whānau programme is a significant opportunity for all parties as it develops relationships with like-minded organisations across Tāmaki Makaurau.
Shelley Katae, TRC’s General Manager Strategy and Performance, says she is excited to see the impact of the service.
“Through the partnership between Te Hoe oo Taamaki and Te Whānau o Waipareira, we know that the service will be grounded in Te Ao Māori and draw on the many strengths that whānau in Tāmaki possess,” Shelly says.
“Coupled with the work we are leading to use whānau insights to drive changes to the way government agencies work here in Tāmaki, we believe Whānau by Whānau will achieve fundamental system change.”
Jacqui Harema, Waipareira Project Lead, says this is a wonderful moment in time for the organisation as it builds on the work Te Whānau O Waipareira has developed over the last three decades.
“Whānau by Whānau has the potential to be a leading service in the next iteration of Whānau Ora and a model of best practice for other providers regionally, nationally and globally“, she says The Whānau by Whānau programme will provide a holistic, evidence-based service codesigned with the local community that supports whānau to achieve and realise long-term and empowering change.
“We acknowledge the community work Waipareira has provided to the west. We welcome their experience and look forward to an ongoing partnership,” said Georgie Thompson, manager of Ruapotaka Marae, a member of the THT collective.
The Whānau by Whānau programme will start providing services to Tāmaki whānau in 2020.
