A trust which administers Māori land on Rakiura-Stewart Island wants to create a multi-day guided walk through some of New Zealand’s most stunning coastlines and virgin forests.

Rakiura Māori Lands Trust chair Simon Gomez says the trust has received a grant to develop a business case for the Great Southern Ocean Guided walk.

The project is expected to cost between $20m to $25m, which it hopes to get from the Provincial Growth Fund.

Mr Gomez says the trust has about 18,000 hectares stretching from Oban to Lords River and taking in some of the most scenic and historic sites on Rakiura.

In association with Real Journeys, it already runs the island’s largest kiwi spotting business, and it also has a Dark Skies tourism business at an area known as the Neck.
