Kaumatua call for directions

The head of South Island Whānau Ora Commissioning Agency, Te Pūtahitanga o Te Waipounamu says providers needs to listen to the voices of kaumatua when designing services for them.
Helen Leahy spoke this morning to the National Kaumātua Service Providers Conference in Rotorua.
She says Te Pūtahitanga-backed initiatives include a group in Murihiku that collects oral histories, poetry and waiata, and a ukulele group in Dunedin that also organises day trips for its members.
In Christchurch and Blenheim there are specialist kaumatua navigators working on whatever issues come up.
“It might be about online banking or how do you avoid scams, how do you know about superannuation, are you getting your entitlements from Work and Income. It might be about preparing for emergencies. Some of the kaupatua want the navigator to assist them with basic karakia and pepeha,” Ms Leahy says.
