Moana backs drones for dolphin protection
Maori-owned seafood company Moana New Zealand is backing a controversial plan to use drones to protect the estimate 63 remaining Māui dolphins.
The plan developed by science group MAUI63 is for drones to search coastal waters for the dolphins and report their location to fishing vessels so they can move away.
Moana chief executive Steve Tarrant says the project fits with the company’s kaupapa of kaitiakitanga.
He says the technology will sit alongside what Moana, fellow major seafood company Sanford and WWF New Zealand are already doing to reduce the risk of harming dolphins.
