The Māori Party is talking to Waipareira head John Tamihere about working together for next year’s election.

After coming up short in the Auckland mayoral race the former Labour MP said a taniwha had been unleashed, and he was considering a return to national politics.

The Māori Party has so far named just one candidate, Debbie Ngarewa Packer in Te Tai Hauāuru, and president Che Wilson says it hopes to name others by Waitangi Day.

He says discussions with Mr Tamihere have so far been about policy.

"JT’s doing some amazing work in the urban area where the majority of our people are. If he's interested, then we'd have to toss that up," Mr Wilson says.

He says if John Tamihere was interested in standing for the Māori party he would have to go through the same selection process as anyone else.
