Waitangi Tribunal to scrutinise Oranga Tamariki policy


The Waitangi Tribunal has agreed to conduct a narrowly-focused inquiry into Oranga Tamariki.
Chief Judge Wilson Isaac says the urgent hearing will look at the Treaty consistency of the Crown’s current legislation, policies and practices for the taking of tamariki Māori into state care.
Claimants include Dr Rawiri Waretini-Karena, a former claimant in the Department of Corrections inquiry, Kerri Nuku on behalf of the Māori Nurses organisation and Dr Alison Green.
Drs Waretini-Karena, Green and Moana Jackson are due to present tomorrow to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care, which is holding two weeks of hearings in Auckland. Drs Waretini-Karena.
