Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Pāenga Hira is taking some of its collection on the move to complement today’s arrival of the Tuia 250 flotilla to the city.

Ata Hira Museum on the Move opened today at Te Wero Island in the Viaduct Harbour and will be open over the long weekend.

Linnae Pohatu, the museum’s director of Māori & Pacific development, says there’s a special focus on the Tahitian navigator Tupaia, who accompanied James Cook to Aotearoa in 1769.

"We’ve been able to do some digital inter-actives so for example Tupaia did some sketches when he was on the Endeavour with Cook and we've been able to make those interactive so kids can hear Tahitian spoken and how similar it is to te reo Maori and lots of other activities like that," she says.

Ata Hira relates to the museum’s current exhibition, Voyage to Aotearoa, Tupaia and the Endeavour.
