Reo Māori speakers keep alcohol under control
Māori public health advocacy body Hāpai Te Hauora says a new report from the Health Promotion Agency on hazardous drinking points to the value of a mātauranga Māori approach to health promotion.
The report found Māori who drink alcohol and live in deprived circumstances are less likely to have a harmful relationship with alcohol if they speak te reo Māori.
Hāpai general manager Janell Dymus-Kurei says it adds to the evidence te reo Māori me ōna tikanga are vehicles for wellbeing for Māori.
The report also found-Māori with higher levels of education are less likely to be hazardous drinkers.
Hāpai Te Hauora believes alcohol-related harm can be reduced by raising the price of alcohol, reducing its availability, and restricting alcohol marketing, especially through sponsorship.
