Ōpōtiki mayor targets poverty reduction

Opotiki’s new mayor says delivering some long-planned economic development projects is the northeast Bay of Plenty’s best hope of fixing some of its social ills.
Lyn Riesterer of Te Whakatōhea won the position after two terms serving on the council.
She will push to win the funding needed to upgrade the town’s harbour so it can service the huge mussel growing operation being developed off the coast by iwi.
The number of kiwiruit orchards on Māori land is also increasing.
"Money is what solves poverty. What we need to do is have more jobs so there is more money and less poverty. And with poverty comes the problems," Ms Riesterer says.
