The Māori Party has selected Debbie Ngarewa-Packer as its candidate for Te Tai Hauāuru in next year’s general election.
Ms Ngarewa-Packer, the chief executive of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Ruanui, was unopposed and was endorsed at the party’s annual meeting at Whangaehu Marae on the weekend.
Party president Che Wilson says she is a phenomenal leader and the right person to win back the seat once held by party co-founder Dame Tariana Turia.
As well as being prominent in iwi and Māori business circles, Ms Ngarewa Packer has also raised her public profile in recent years by mobilising her community in the campaign against seabed mining off the South Taranaki coast.
