Kaipara taonga for show at Kauri Museum
Te Uri o Hau and the Kauri Museum at Matakohe have been working with Auckland War Memorial Museum to prepare for the return of a major collection of Kaipara artefacts.
The 162 items collected by Andrew Rintoul before 1913 were deposited in Auckland Museum in 1925 and left there on loan after they were bequeathed to the Kauri Museum in 1968.
Te Uri o Hau kaumātua Hone Martin says when the taonga come home to Kaipara tangata whenua will begin to unravel their stories.
The collection will be welcomed home and blessed on Waihaua Marae on October 12 and then transferred to the Kauri Museum.
Some of the collection will be exhibited over summer, and research on the taonga will also begin to determine longer term display outcomes.
Taonga not on display will be accessible in a new research centre.
