Te Ātiawa Kaumātua Housing Trust yesterday opened four new kaumātua flats in Waitara.
The trust was set up in 1992 specifically to provide social housing options for elders in the Taranaki region.
Māori Development and Associate Housing Minister Nanaia Mahuta says Te Puni Kōkiri's Māori Housing Network invested $705,000 into the project, which was instigated after a fire destroyed one of the trust's houses three years ago.
