Local context makes vaping safer choice
Māori tobacco control advocacy service Hāpai te Hauora is standing by vaping as a way to help whānau stop smoking.
The technology is under renewed scrutiny after it was linked to the deaths of six people in the United States.
Advocacy manager Mihi Blair says that needs to be set against the 14 people a day who die in New Zealand of smoking-related diseases.
So far the fatalities seem to be linked to underground vape juices including elements such as THC rather than commercial products.
"Within the New Zealand context use a reputable supplier in your local area and purchase from them. We need to remember our suppliers and industry make their own products which are high grade, totally professional and very clinical methods of making these products," Ms Blair says.
Vaping should be seen as an avenue towards a smokefree life, rather than an alternative to smoking tobacco.
