New designs offer range of options for marae

Innovative resources for marae looking at housing programmes have been launched today at Te Puea Marae in Māngere.
They were developed over the past two years by researcher funded Kainga Tahi, Kainga Rua Building Better Homes, Towns and Cities, National Science Challenge.
Rau Hoskins, who led the Te Manaaki o te Marae along with Unitec Professor Jenny Lee-Morgan, says marae started as the centres of kainga, but over the years most have lost their housing apart from a few kaumātua flats.
He says Te Puea's efforts to address the housing crisis have inspired many other marae, and the project has come up with draft plans for other marae in Tāmaki Makaurau that could inspire those in other parts of the country.
"The range begins perhaps at what we call a nano whare, a kaupapa Māori version of a tiny house and it builds on the cabins Te Puea Memorial Marae has been working from for the past four years, customises those designs, but those designs are able to be reasonably low cost and fit in to quite tight spaces," Mr Hoskins says.
Other designs in the Tūranga ki te marae, e tau ana package include houses that can accommodate several generations of a whānau, hostels, and terraced medium density housing.
