The New Zealand Māori Council says Air New Zealand's bid to trademark 'Kia Ora' was offensive and it should back off.
The airline says it wants to trademark the phrase as it is used in the logo of its in-flight magazine, which ahs been around since 2007.
Council executive director Matthew Tūkaki says it's an insult to all Māori and all New Zealanders during Māori language week:
He says the language is a national treasure, and it's not for business to use it and profit from it as they see fit.
