Corrections has moved on its new Hōkai Rangi strategy by appointing its first deputy chief executive Māori.

He's Topia Rameka, who is currently chief executive of the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board .

Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis says having a dedicated Māori voice at the top table is an important step in the department's commitment to working with Māori to tackle the long-term challenge of Māori reoffending and imprisonment.

He says Mr Rameka has significant expertise in corporate and iwi governance, the development of Māori enterprise, utilities and natural resource management, and holds strong relationships with iwi business and key stakeholders.

He has been a member of Corrections' Māori leadership board, Te Poari Hautū Rautaki Māori, which worked alongside frontline staff, service providers, academics and other Māori experts to assist in the development of the final Hōkai Rangi strategy.
