Mountain bikers carve up maunga midden

The Tāmaki Makaurau Tūpuna Maunga Authority is trying to find out who carved mountain bike tracks into the northern slopes of Takarunga / Mt Victoria in Devonport.
Operations manager Nick Turoa says excavation of dirt to construct ramps and berms on downward slopes point to mountain bikers being to blame.
The tracks cut in to historic pa terraces, and a midden or shell deposit has also been disturbed.
Off-road biking is strictly prohibited on all areas of the maunga, and any illegal modification of Takarunga is prosecutable under the Reserves Act 1977 and the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014.
Similar damage occurred at another Auckland maunga and historic pa site, Ōtāhuhu / Mt Richmond, in October 2018.
