Health reviews on song over Māori access
The National Hauora Coalition says the Health and Disability Sector Review's interim report echoes many of the findings of July's Hauora Report from the Waitangi Tribunal.
The review led by Heather Simpson found the health system was overly complicated and very fragmented, and it called for significant change.
It also noted that while Te Tiriti o Waitangi guaranteed Māori full rights and benefits as citizens of Aotearoa, outcomes for Māori are significantly poorer than for non-Māori.
Coalition chief executive Simon Royal says that strengthens the case for an independent Māori hauora authority, as recommended by the tribunal.
He says the state of Māori health is a humanitarian crisis.
