Māori self help advisor mines spirit tradition
The author of a self-help book based on Māori ancestral knowledge says getting in touch with a spiritual dimension will improve health.
Hana Tapiata from Te Arawa, the author of Self Awareness Still Doesn't Begin With Self, is also a popular blogger and public speaker.
She says traditionally Māori were a spiritual people, even though many traditional practices disappeared with colonisation and the influence of organised religion.
"Because our tūpuna were spiritual, they had karakia for all the different spaces they entered into. They made sure their mauri was protected from when they were in states of noa and in states of tapu. They had rituals in place to make sure they were ok as well as the spaces they entered in and out from," Ms Tapiata says.
She says rediscovering such practices can help with individual growth and healing.
