Indigenous trade not just products
Ngāti Kahungunu chair Ngahiwi Tomoana is pleased at the results of a session on indigenous trade run as part of this week's National Iwi Chairs Forum in Hastings.
Yesterday's session drew manuhiri from the United States, Canada, Argentina, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Samoa and other Pacific states.
Mr Tomoana says culture and commerce are twins, and tribal trading platforms are a way to break colonial patterns and open up the conversation about what trade is and how it can help drive indigenous development.
"And when we talk trade we don't just mean products. We mean trade in healthcare, in environmental care, in the reo renaissance, in cultural renaissance, as well as goods. We share our kaupapa," he says.
