Collaboration key part of Māori leadership
Courageous leadership is the theme of Maori health workforce development organisation Te Rau Matatini's annual Toitū Hauora conference at Te Papa in Wellington this week.
Chief executive Maria Baker says the hui has heard from the likes of Professor Sir Mason Durie and Moana Jackson, and today it is getting a youth perspective from leaders of the Ihumātao occupation.
She says the hui is an opportunity for Māori collectively to look at issues like how to advance the aspirations set out in Te Tiriti o Waitangi, how to tackle institutional racism, what kaupapa Māori will look like in future, and how to stay accountable to the people.
"It is a good time to think about leadership more broadly, grounding it in te ao Māori but also being exceptionally clever about how we do this together as a collaborative and that we are more connected so that we have a combined impact on accelerating the wellbeing of our people," Ms Baker says.
