Whanganui kaitiaki story theme for Expo 2020 in Dubai

The Whanganui River will provide the theme for New Zealand's pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.
New Zealand Trade and Enterprise has signed an memorandum with the iwi governance entity Ngā Tāngata Tiaki o Whanganui allowing the pavilion to focus on the world-first legal status accorded to the Whanganui River.
Ngā Tāngata Tiaki chair Gerrard Albert, says recognising the river as a living entity, known as Te Awa Tupua, also meant recognising people as part of the natural environment.
New Zealand's Expo 2020 Dubai Commissioner General, Clayton Kimpton, says the pavilion will show New Zealand as a contemporary, forward-thinking nation that recognises values such as kaitiakitanga are at the heart of caring for people and place.
A series of business events and an entertainment and cultural programme are being developed for the Expo, which runs for six months from October 2020.
